Photographs and Memories by Jim Croce free essay sample
Most people when they think of ââ¬Ë70s music think disco or maybe some rock. This however does not describe Jim Corce at all. It isnt the upbeat party music with a good bass that is so common today. Photographs and Memories is all about the lyrics. It has great music by itself proven in the songs in the intros and endings. Certain songs on the album are slower than others, however the music still kept my interest throughout the whole album. Jim Croce paints a picture with each song and each word he sings. Every song tells a different story, each relatable in one way or another. Jim Croce released 5 albums and 11 singles in his 7 year career. Photographs and Memories is a collection of his greatest hits. The album was released september 26, 1974, after Jimââ¬â¢s death in 1973. The collection contains 14 hits from the singerââ¬â¢s career. The album eventually reached number 2 on billboards top 200 and went platinum. Corceââ¬â¢s lets the instrumentals shine at places through the song along with places where he sings with only a guitar as his backup. It starts off with more of a jazzy feel, starting with only the piano, then lyrics, and finishes by adding more instruments through the song. There are those who have taken up the responsibility of building a bright future not only for themselves but for their future generations. Those young people have also given me the zeal to yearn for a better as a young person in South Africa. I was born in 1992, during the times of the referendum, the imminent start of the township wars and the creation of the co. za internet domain. My siblings were already approaching teendom and on the verge of becoming some of the first black learners at previously white high schools. They were the first to experience a multi-racial atmosphere in its infancy. Reading their stories has somewhat given my spirit a new lease on life. Quite a few prominent young people today in this country have overcome situations where the ordinary individual would not have been strong enough to endure. I live in the Vaal; an area of untapped talent which is yearning for investment. The Vaal has a very rich history, up there with the likes of Soweto. The youth of this region are immensely talented but are in desperate need of facilities that would make their lives better. Most are budding artists, like my group of friends but we are mostly forced to travel to the city of gold in pursue of those dreams. I have an exciting picture in my head; an indelible mark that one day my region will rise and claim its stake amongst those celebrated areas. My wish is for the youth of the Vaal Triangle to come together and turn the area into cultural hub of many diverse, interactive and positively uplifting sub-culture trends. For now, Braamfontein is in forefront of propelling the independent artist to the greater heights. The area is synonymous with the Internet generation, people who have placed their talent on the Web and are reaching more and more individuals through their works. When I first travelled to Braam in 2012, I was in awe of the vibrant energy circulating through the area. The area had once again come alive and most areas too (Maboneng and Newtown). Gone are those days when Johannesburg was wrought with rampant crime and urban decay. We have to embrace our past, understand it and use it as a tool; a tool for correcting those social ills of the past. I have chosen to arm myself with knowledge and to grab those changes with both hands. I have been afforded the chance of growing up and the township and in an urban area, and ever since I moved my life changed. I began to yearn for a better life and set of living. I now longer fear taking chances because I know success or failure are imminent. I have truly embraced my youth and I will soon be living proof that being youth in South Africa, has boundless possibilities.

The most important similarity is that both care about and care for Romeo and Juliet very much. Friar Lawrence and Nurse both affected the outcome greatly. Nurse relayed messages from Juliet to Romeo. These messages that Nurse carried helped set up one of Friar Lawrenceââ¬â¢s most important parts in the play: the marriage. If the two teenagers hadnââ¬â¢t been married, most likely, the ending would have been different. The marriage between Romeo and Juliet was what caused Julietââ¬â¢s emotional anguish after Romeo killed Tybalt. That is the reason Juliet went to such extremes to get to Romeo. Set Theory and How It Is Used Set theory is a fundamental concept throughout all of mathematics.à This branch of mathematics forms a foundation for other topics.à Intuitively a set is a collection of objects, which are called elements. Although this seems like a simple idea, it has some far-reaching consequences.à Elements The elements of a set can really be anything ââ¬â numbers, states, cars, people or even other sets are all possibilities for elements. Just about anything that can be collected together may be used to form a set, though there are some things we need to be careful about. Equal Sets Elements of a set are either in a set or not in a set. We may describe a set by a defining property, or we may list the elements in the set. The order that they are listed is not important. So the sets {1, 2, 3} and {1, 3, 2} are equal sets, because they both contain the same elements. Two Special Sets Two sets deserve special mention. The first is the universal set, typically denoted U. This set is all of the elements that we may choose from. This set may be different from one setting to the next. For example, one universal set may be the set of real numbers whereas for another problem the universal set may be the whole numbers {0, 1, 2,...}.à The other set that requires some attention is called the empty set. The empty set is the unique set is the set with no elements. We can write this as { } and denote this set by the symbol âËâ¦. Subsets and the Power Set A collection of some of the elements of a set A is called a subset of A. We say that A is a subset of B if and only if every element of A is also an element of B. If there are a finite number n of elements in a set, then there are a total of 2n subsets of A. This collection of all of the subsets of A is a set that is called the power set of A. Set Operations Just as we can perform operations such as addition - on two numbers to obtain a new number, set theory operations are used to form a set from two other sets. There are a number of operations, but nearly all are composed from the following three operations: Union ââ¬â A union signifies a bringing together. The union of the sets A and B consists of the elements that are in either A or B.Intersection - An intersection is where two things meet. The intersection of the sets A and B consists of the elements that in both A and B.Complement - The complement of the set A consists of all of the elements in the universal set that are not elements of A. The first criticism against the motion picture rating system has been presented by film critic Ebert who claims the rating system to place more importance on the minute details of the movie rather than the movie itself. This argument stands against the system's choice of picking on intricate details of the movie like the number of times a profane word is used or the number of scenes containing violence. This allows the rating system to escape from the throes of presenting the true message of the movie. For instance, a movie with sex and violence could be discussing the consequences these activities could teach to the audience. Adult ratings should be limited to those movies which show an immense degree of sex and violence. This would help in the removal of NC-17 which allows a greater number to access a variety of movies. Ratings of movies like Passion of the Christ should not have ratings that limit individuals under 17 from watching a movie (Ebert 2004). This is because the rating system creates a loss in the true message of the movie in its quest to censor the content. Another idea that stands up against movie rating systems is the belief that filmmakers are forced to change movies because the content affects the personal sensibilities of the members of the censorship board. Farber, a film critic talks of how filmmakers were threatened with an X rating to make them remove content which offended the board members (1972). This is seen as biased behavior on the part of the rating systems board because of their inability to provide a decision based solely on the judgment of creating a rating that will be friendly to the audience. Instead, the board is apt on creating ratings that will inadvertently be influenced by their personal beliefs and opinions. Another idea that talks of the flaws in the rating system is the lack of public opinion that is involved. There is a call by both conservative and liberal parties to make the rating system's methods and techniques more public thus allowing a degree of public scrutiny into their decisions. However, this idea seems a little impossible because it is impossible to pin point exact standards set up by the rating system. Movies today touch a variety of topics and issues. It is impossible to set up every method up for the public because it might not apply to each movie. Thus, setting up a public forum would be problematic because every individual's ideas vary and this could be chaotic and unhelpful. The rating system is criticized for its inability to present an equal treatment to the independent studios. This criticism lies on the belief that independent studios are not meted out with the same ratings as those given to major studios. Thus, independent studios are given a harsher rating system which is a great setback in the creation of new and diverse films. An instance of this is evident in the rating given to the movie Saints and Soldiers. The movie was created by an independent studio and created a limited amount of sex, profanity and violence. Yet, a single scene where a character is killed made the movie get a PG-13 rating (Deseret News). Employee Decision Making and Retention One of the ways to retain employees is to give them an opportunity to provide information about change and opportunities for advancement. Many employees bring their most creative and innovative ideas when they fee l they have the opportunity to be heard. Chen, Ployhart et al. (2011) studied the issue of employee turnover and why this often happened. They found that an employeeââ¬â¢s job satisfaction is central to whether they stay in on organisation or whether they leave. The positive aspects of treating employees as stakeholders is that it makes them feel valued, makes them create a stronger commitment to the organisation and motivates them to contribute (Wilkin son and Fay, 2011). With employees as active participants in the decision making process, the managers would become more accountable in their financial practices as well as in their accounting of what they were charged to do (Chilosi and Damiani 2007). Some of the challenges to this method include that some employees may feel they do not have to work as hard because they are important to the organisation, and this attitude can lead to a lessening of productivity. Also, employees involved as stakeholders could create a challenge for outsiders who come into the firm to bring their assistance because they would know as much as the insiders. In some cases, managers can become disgruntled because they may perceive that they do not have as much power because all employees have a say (Chilosi and Damiani 2007).
